The Hike
From Swift Creek Trailhead, itâs a short distance to where the trail forks left to Yellowstone River or right to Swift Creek. Stay right and climb 5.5 miles to Deer Lake. Deer Lake is probably at its best early in the season. Later on, the lake becomes less attractive as the water level drops, leaving a muddy, rocky shoreline. If you can get there just after âice-off,â you could experience some fast fishing for pan-size brook and cutthroat trout. Other fishing opportunities include Grayling Lake (about 1.0 mile southeast) and Swift Creek. The outlet from Deer Lake joins Swift Creek about 0.5 mile below. Hardly anyone fishes the creek. Try it with a small spinner, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
There is a 20-foot dam across the outlet. Fair campsites can be located near the dam. They are not top-quality camping spots, but they will suffice. Springwater is available at the inlet, as is a small amount of horse pasture. Firewood should be plentiful, even though this area sees a lot of visitors. Most travelers only stop for lunch on their way to more popular lakes. You should have it all to yourself during the evening hours.
Shutterbugs will enjoy the view back down Swift Creek Drainage, as well as the setting around Deer Lake. Deer Lake lies in a narrow valley, surrounded by pines on its long sides, with a picturesque cliff sealing off the back end.
